Enchantment and best friends

Rockport seniors direct play for families

ROCKPORT — Two Rockport High School seniors are directing a play that will be staged free for families tonight and tomorrow.

“Ashford, Ella, And The Dream,” directed by Sam Cunningham and William Gleckner, is a tale about friendship and pluck that finds a path in Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Mythical Athens, enchanted woodlands, the fairy tale time of “once upon” is where the story plays.

Ella is stuck in a horrible job as Lady Clementine’s maid. But Ella has a plan to go to college, and a best friend who tells her she is a girl with a fairy godfather.

Ashford, also known as Puck, the jester, magician, diplomat to dukes and fairy kings as well as Shakespeare’s friend and partner, merrily wanders into Ella’s view one evening with books and a wink. Ella and Ashford becomes best friends forever at first sight.

Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” has captured Ella’s imagination so much that Lady Clementine catches her reading.

Ella screams when startled and drops her book; fairies, and elves, and common folk, and a king begin slipping out all over the place.

Shakespeare’s “Dream” casts a spell of enchantment over Ella and everyone else, too.

Directors Cunningham and Gleckner have worked with Dona Lambert in coaching the young actors of the Chicken Coupe Troupe for three years. As graduating seniors this marks their last play and season with the group.

“Ashford, Ella, and the Dream” will be presented tonight, May 3, at 7 and Saturday, May 4, at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Rockport at 4 Cleaves St. in Rockport.

The show is free but donations are appreciated. The show time is about 90 minutes with an intermission. Refreshments will be sold.

Lambert may be contacted at 978-546-2416 for more information.
