Lucas wins Rockport seat; voters also back store alcohol sales

Eliza Lucas has captured a seat on the Rockport Board of Selectmen, scoring an emphatic victory Tuesday in a town election that also saw voters give their final OK to allowing the sales of beer and wine at town grocery store.

Lucas rang up 1,028 votes to Donald Campbell’s 563 in a selectman’s race between two first-time town candidates.

In capturing 64 percent of the votes cast, Lucas, who, with her husband, co-owns the Top Dog on Bearskin Neck, proved to be the winner in all three precincts, besting Campbell by a count of 251-153 in Precinct 1, 321-214 in Precinct 2, and 456-196 in Precinct 3.

On the alcohol sale question, voters backed approval of a proposal that town officials and residents hope will help attract a grocery store to Rockport, which has been without one since the closing of the IGA in Whistlestop Mall in January 2011.

The proposal, which serves as the final green light to a petition that had been sent to, then approved by, the state Legislature, drew 1,406 votes in favor to just 182 opposed.

In other races, Herman Lilja earned a seat on the town’s Planning Board with a 1,202 to 228 victory over announced write-in candidate Edward Hand. There were also a total of 27 other write-in votes for other candidates.

Also, Rev. Matthe Wigton earned a set on the Rockport Housing Authority board by drawing 129 votes and beating out Michael Josephon’s 42 in a race that drew only write-in candidates. A total of 33 other votes were cast for other write-in candidates in that race.

Overall, the elections drew a turnout of 29.71 percent, with 1,632 of the town’s 5,511 voters making their way to the polls.
