Talk of the Times: Dog Bar mixologist is Block Party champ

Talk of the Times

Mixologist Misty Baker, representing the Dog Bar on Main Street, was the winner of Ryan & Wood Distillery’s second “Spirit of Gloucester Cocktail Contests” at the second of this summer’s three Downtown Block Parties last Saturday.

Baker’s gin-based “Knockabout Jell-O Shots,” captured the most votes from Block Party diners and tasters. The contest is being held at each of the three Downtown Gloucester Block Parties, with the participating Block Party restaurants offering various drinks made with Ryan & Wood products — including, in this case the local distillery’s Knockabout Gin.

Gloucester mixologists from Giuseppe’s, Ohana, Alchemy, DogBar and Lat43 all participated in last weekend’s event. The cocktail contests are being sponsored by Ryan & Wood, which is based in Gloucester’s Blackburn Industrial Park.

Asked how she came up with her winning creation, Baker said she “decided to do something evocative of my hometown of New Orleans where August means fun summer drinks.”

“We decided to keep it simple,” she said. “No need to lose sleep over it. And what party is complete without jungle juice and Jell-O shots? DogBar is the party of the Block Party and so we decided to go all of the way.”

The next contest will come with the season’s next and final Block Party — on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Guest starter at Magnolia 5k

When runners step off for the annual Magnolia Library road race this morning, they will do so after getting a signal from a very special guest.

Sgt. Cheryl Vossmer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Police Department will be a co-starter for the 9 a.m. race as a special tribute tied to the April Boston Marathon bombings and their aftermath.

Sgt. Vossmer was a colleague of slain MIT officer Sean Collier, who was killed by the accused terrorists in a spree that led to the Watertown shootout, the death of terror suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and the capture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
