Gloucester Daily Times

---- — ESSEX — Did you know that eight bodies disappeared from the town’s Old Burial Ground on Main Street in the early 1800s, before community of Essex, then known as Ipswich’s Chebacco Parish, was even a town?

The scandal made headlines, and a reward was offered for information on the body snatchings.

The full story, and its outcome, will be just some of what visitors will learn when taking the Essex Graveyard History Tour this Sunday Sept. 15, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Old Burial Ground, 28 Main St. (Route 133).

Those on the tour will also “meet” some very interesting and important figures in Essex and American history, including Revolutionary War heroes, and learn some Essex history that few know.

Tours will run continuously between 2 and 5 p.m., with the last tour beginning at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the end of the tour. After the tour, attendees are welcome to visit the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, which closes at 5 p.m.

The tour is $8 for Essex Shipbuilding Museum members, and $10 for nonmembers. For more information, call 978-768-7514. Rain date is Sept. 22; if it is raining, check website www.essexshipbuildingmuseum.org for status of tours.
