Gloucester Police/Fire: Crash leads to charges, sends two to hospital

A 21-year-old Rockport man faces charges after he and two passengers in his vehicle were injured in a crash on Veterans Way when the vehicle veered into a telephone pole about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The two passengers, both 18-year-old Gloucester girls, were transported to Beverly Hospital by the Fire Rescue squad. The front seat passenger suffered face and head injuries, while the rear seat passenger injured her leg in the crash.

The driver, Lee Stevenson, was transported to Addison Gilbert Hospital with a bloody nose and lip. Before his transport, Stevenson told police he was driving over the speed limit and struck a curb with his right rear tire, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and veer across the roadway, over the sidewalk curb and into the telephone pole.

Police charged Stevenson with driving during a license suspension and driving to endanger.

Police detectives dressed in plain clothes arrested two men, charging both with heroin possession and heroin possession with intent to distribute Saturday about 7:10 p.m.

The officers observed one of the men tying up a twist bag in a vehicle parked on Maplewood Avenue, with a digital scale in “plain view” in the vehicle; a substance that appeared to be heroin was observed next to it, along with residue and a plastic card.

The officers arrested 20-year-old Joseph M. Fronduto of Saugus and 23-year-old Brandon L. Rinaldi of Peabody.

Police also seized $365 from Rinaldi to use as evidence.

Both men were also charged with violating drug laws within a school zone, as they were within 300 feet of St. Ann’s School when arrested. The school is now closed.

Roberto Gomez, 25, was arrested and charged with assault by dangerous weapon after he brandished a knife during an argument in his Granite Street home Saturday about 3:26 a.m.
