---- — Just hours after Britain’s Andy Murray polished off top-seeded Novak Djokovic to capture a memorable men’s Wimbledon 2013 championship, big-time professional tennis arrived on Cape Ann Sunday night as well.

The Boston Lobsters opened their new World Team Tennis home at Manchester Athletic Club’s new Joan Norton Tennis Center/stadium court before — despite threatening weather — an enthusasiastic crowd against the New York Sportimes. And the Lobsters cooperated, winning their MAC debut 20-18 by taking the men’s doubles finale 5-2 under the WTT’s scoring point-by-point format.

The Lobsters, who had previously played their home WTT matches at Danvers’ Ferncroft Country Club, are the first major league sports franchise ever to be based on Cape Ann. And the team will feature captain and one-time U.S. Open finalist and former top-20-ranked player Mark Philippoussis throughout the season, though he was unable to play in Sunday night’s opener and is expected to make his debut in Manchester next Sunday against the Philadelphia Freedoms.

After road matches tonight against the Springfield Lasers in Springfield, Mo., and Tuesday against former multiple Grand Slam winner Martina Hingis and her Washington Kastles in D.C., the Lobsters return home Wednesday for a MAC rematch against New York.
