Gloucester Policed/Fire: Fire crews knock down Rte. 128 car blaze

Gloucester Police/Fire

Firefighters extinguished a fire in a car engine on Route 128 North near Exit 14 Thursday about 10:16 a.m.

Fire officials said the female driver was uninjured in the incident. She pulled over immediately after noticing smoke emanating from the hood of her vehicle. Tally’s towed the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation stamped out a brush fire about 500 feet away. Firefighters at first thought fire from the car had caused grass on the side of the roadway to catch fire, but the two incidents were unrelated.

A 71-year-old Fort Square resident, who paramedics have found “intoxicated and picked up “almost daily” lately, was again transported to Addison Gilbert Hospital when an officer found him sitting on a sidewalk in front of the Tedeschi’s plaza on Washington Street Wednesday about 9 p.m.

Police said the man was “very intoxicated” Wednesday night and had abrasions on his arms. The officer also noted that the man is “well known” to him as someone with “alcohol related problems.”

A Prospect Street woman reported a Trek brand bicycle stolen from her back porch. The woman told police Wednesday afternoon that the bicycle had been locked to the back porch.

She described the bike as a black bicycle with red lettering and a baby seat attachment on the rear. Police had yet to locate the bicycle Thursday morning.

A natural gas line that was leaking after being struck on Arlington Street in Annisquam Thursday morning was quickly capped.

Firefighters and police on the scene said they could hear the sound of natural gas venting into the air about 9:20 a.m. National Grid capped the line and fixed the problem soon after.
