A make-believe rescue at Good Harbor

Good Harbor scene a commercial project

Emergency personnel were out in force on Gloucester’s Good Harbor Beach Thursday morning, and, for all appearances, a person lay near death near the shoreline.

But the scene wasn’t real. It wasn’t even an emergency drill. It was, in fact, the filming of a commercial.

Mark Cole, Gloucester’s operations manager of public service in the Department of Public Works, confirmed that a Japanese film production company had sought and gained permission from the city to use the beach to make a commercial for a brand of defibrillator, the electronic apparatus used in heart resuscitation. And the Boston-based casting company put out a call for EMTs and other emergency personnel.

Cole said the idea was to show that a defibrillator can essentially revive someone who is near death.

He also noted that the city of Gloucester, in fact, has defibrillators available in case of just such an emergency at both Good Harbor and Wingaersheek beaches.
