Last pieces to Newell puzzle

Restrooms cap major construction

The track has been coated and sealed, the new field has been installed, and plans are in place for Newell Stadium’s grand reopening.

Now, the last major piece of the puzzle — and an important, fan-friendly one at that — is in place as well.

The new restroom facilities for Gloucester High School’s $3.5 million restored stadium were delivered and installed this week, with the plumbing already built right into the four modular pieces that were brought to the site Thursday and then assembled at the field by United Concrete Products of Wallingford, Conn.

The newly restored stadium — which will be able to host high school track meets for the first time in seven years, and will be home to graduation ceremonies and community events such as the Cape Ann Relay For Life and St. Peter’s Fiesta soccer tournaments — also drew a tour this week from members of the Gloucester School Committee. They, and other city officials will be part of the opening ceremonies on Friday night, Sept 6.

The main attraction, however, will be Gloucester High School’s football Fishermen, who will christen the new stadium and field that night at 7:30 with their own opening game against Lynn Classical.
