Rockport restaurant faces bank auction tomorrow
ROCKPORT — A bank has placed everything inside The Greenery Restaurant up for auction — from the artwork hanging on its walls to the Fry-O-Lators.
The one-day sale begins inside the 15 Dock Square eatery tomorrow morning at 11. The doors will open at 9:30 to give the public a chance to inspect the dozens of items up for bid.
According to Auctioneer Michael Salvadore Jr., of Salvadore Auctions & Appraisals, Inc., a $100 deposit will be required of those wishing to participate in the bidding; the money is completely refundable if no purchase is made.
Salvadore said normally he is able to inspect, take pictures and label the items ahead of time, but "because of the unique circumstances in which The Greenery continues to operate after foreclosure" he will not be able to label the lots until tomorrow morning.
The auction is labeled "absolute," Salvadore said — meaning everything must be sold tomorrow and liquidated into cash for the bank.
The restaurant and the building it's in has been owned by Marmion Way resident Amy Hale since she purchased the 30-year-old business — which appears in state corporation division files as Zarbrah, Inc. — from its founders, Deborah Lyons and Marjorie Zarling, about seven years ago.
Contacted shortly after the restaurant closed for the day on Friday, Hale said, "On advice from my attorney, I can't comment on it right now." She declined to speculate on the future of the business, but said the building was also sold last week.
Ryan Profett, the attorney for the "secured party" that called for the auction, would not reveal his client's identity on Friday.
However, when contacted by phone at her home in Del Mar, Calif., Lyons confirmed that TDBank had called for the auction.
"It was a lot of fun, it's a great location," Lyons said. "The year before we sold it, it received best restaurant in Rockport in the Frommer's (travel) guide ... so it's kind of sad."
Lyons said the restaurant was known as The Greenery Creamery when it was in its original location in the Granite Shore Building on Main Street.
Over the past three decades, the restaurant expanded to serve full breakfast, lunch and dinner menus.
The Greenery was once a busy restaurant where reservations were recommended for dinner, and recent reviews left by people on TripAdvisor.com gush about the restaurant's great view of Rockport Harbor. But for the most part, the accolades stop there.
Many reviewers complain of "average food" and "slow" and "rude service." But a Pennsylvania man said he "enjoyed a very nice dinner and the fries were some of the best (he) ever ate" when he visited the restaurant last summer.
"I was surprised that it was dinner time and not very busy," he wrote in the Aug. 7 posting. "We at first thought it was closed. Some of the reviews I've read say it's gone downhill, but I was very happy with my dinner and service."
