Christian Bale, Amy Adams flick filming in Salem

SALEM — A few Hollywood A-listers could be on Federal Street this week.

The 1970s corruption drama “American Hustle” will be filming in Salem for the next few days. Film crews unloaded lights, racks of costumes and other equipment near the former District and Superior court buildings Monday.

Salem police were directing pedestrians and traffic on Federal Street during filming yesterday.

The film’s cast includes Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner.

A film spokesperson declined Monday to specify which cast members could be filming in Salem this week.

Filming will be done on a “closed set,” which means the public and media will not have any access to the goings-on.

The film, directed by David O. Russell, has been filming in and around Boston since mid-April.

Russell also directed “The Fighter,” the 2010 film about boxer Micky Ward, which was also filmed in the Boston area.

“Like Russell’s previous films, ‘American Hustle’ defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes,” according to a press release from the filmmakers.

“American Hustle” follows con man Irving Rosenfeld (Bale), who along with his equally cunning British partner and lover Sydney Prosser (Adams) is forced to work for wild, unhinged FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper), according to the release.

“DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey power brokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting,” the release said. “Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife, Rosalyn (Lawrence), could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down.”

“American Hustle” releases in December.
