ROCKPORT — Police filed charges yesterday against a South Street man who was taken into protective custody on Sunday after he tried to run off without paying the fare for a taxi ride.
Police found Denny A. Gannett, 35, of 22 South St., hiding in a yard on Main Street minutes after a taxi driver walked into the police station reporting a man jumped out of the vehicle and ran after arriving in town from Gloucester at 1:27 a.m. Sunday.
Gannett pleaded guilty in Gloucester District Court yesterday to charges of evading a taxi fare and disturbing the peace. He was ordered to pay $170 in fines.
A 22-year-old man was arrested Sunday on a default warrant out of Newbury. Jason N. Mowen, of 41 South St., was taken into custody at 9:07 a.m.
Michael D. Elwell, 25, of 407 Essex Ave., Gloucester, was stopped on Marmion Way at 7:28 a.m. Saturday and arrested on a straight warrant out of Newburyport District Court.
A person whose vehicle was parked at Whistlestop Mall reported two holes in the rear window of the car at 1:04 p.m. Sunday.
A Stockholm Ave. resident called police at 11:52 p.m. Sunday to report a white car "full of kids" threw the street sign for Highland Road into the woods and fled.
The Fire Department responded to a Drumlin Road home at 8:38 Friday night on a report of activated smoke detectors. Firefighters determined burnt food triggered the alarms; they ventilated the residence and cleared the scene.
Rescuers transported a Dodd's Lane woman to Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester at 9:57 p.m. Friday. Rescuers also transported women from High Street and Jerden's Lane and men from Squam Road, Main and Pigeon Hill streets to the hospital over the holiday weekend.
