MANCHESTER — Part of the curriculum at Brookwood School is to teach students about environmental sustainability.
And tomorrow, its students, along with local businesses and organizations, will be sharing the message with the local community.
The school is hosting its third annual Sustainability Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at its Manchester campus on Brookwood Street.
The mission of the fair, which is free to the public, is to educate the community on the latest eco-friendly products and trends in sustainable practices. The event will feature many local and regional exhibitors, including Cape Ann organizations such as Kestrel Adventures and the Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team, who are leading the way in sustainable practices, recycling and protecting the environment.
Ben Wildrick of Gloucester, a science teacher and the sustainability coordinator at Brookwood, said sustainable issues involve everyone in the community.
"All the choices we make have an effect on the environment, from the amount of water we use to what products we decide to purchase," Wildrick said. "That is why we see sustainability as a community project."
Many students at the school will have table displays set up to allow the community to learn about what they have been studying, including composting and recycling. There will also be a presentation by Peter Lourie, who wrote the book, "Whaling Season: A Year in the Life of an Arctic Whale Scientist."
"Sustainability is not just about environmental issues," said Wildrick, "but social and economical as well."
Beyond the educational aspect of the fair, there will also be raffles and activities for children.
"It is a family-oriented type of fair," Wildrick said, "so there is plenty of stuff for kids to do."
