For the second time in three years, the Gloucester Fishermen are high school champs -- and owners of a perfect record.
Conor Ressel scored three touchdowns and quarterback Brett Cahill tossed a pair of TD passes tonight as the Fishermen -- undaunted by a driving snowstorm that blanketed the field and the Gillette Stadium seats -- rolled to a 33-13 win over Bridgewater-Raynham in their Division 1A Super Bowl at the Foxboro home of the 3-time NFL Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.
The championship win gives the Fishermen a spotless 2009 record of 13-0.
With Gloucester leading 19-7 at the half and after three quarters, Ressel hauled in a 28-yard swing pass from Brett Cahill on just the second play of the fourth quarter, then raced 22 yards for another score with six minutes left to help the Fishermen pull away. Ressel's three touchdowns brought his season total to a whopping 31 in 13 games.
In the first half, Cahill hit Brandon Cusumano with a 12-yard touchdown pass after running backs Jordan Shairs and Ressel had scored first-quarter TDs.
After the Fishermen recovered a Trojan fumble, Shairs burst into the end zone from 1 yard out just two minutes into the game, and Ressel followed moments later on a 52-yard run to put the Fishermen up 13-0 .
Bridgewater-Raynham answered to make it 13-7 with a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike Connolly to Neil Harrington later in the first quarter. And the Trojans were driving with 3 minutes left in the half, but Shairs picked off a Connolly pass to preserve the Fishermen's lead, then broke off a 46-yard run to give Gloucester a first-and-goal and set up the Cahill-to-Cusumano TD pass.
