Newest resident debuts at Beverly

Connor Joseph Sclafani is less than a day old, and already has a special distinction.

He is Gloucester's first baby not just of 2010, but of the new decade, having entered the world yesterday — on New Year's Day — at 4:50 p.m. at Beverly Hospital.

Connor, the second child of Gloucester residents Krystal and Salvatore Sclafani, weighed in at 7 pounds, 15 ounces, and stretched 201âÑ2 inches long, Phyllis Cusenza, Krystal's mother and baby Connor's grandmother, said last night. The family also includes little Connor's 21âÑ2-year-old sister Adrianna.

While Connor is believed to be Cape Ann's first new baby of 2020, he was not the first born in the new decade at Beverly Hospital. That distinction went to Benjamin Alexander Siering, whose mom, Danielle Siering of Salem, delivered him at 2:54 a.m.

Baby Benjamin beat out Dillon Veasna Kim-Voeun, the first baby born at Salem Hospital in 2010, by a mere two minutes to earn the apparent distinction as the first New Year's baby on the North Shore.

Like a lot of people, Danielle Siering was counting down to midnight on New Year's Eve. In her case, however, it was obvious that the milestone marked more than the arrival of a new year.

"The ball dropped," she said, "and my water broke."
