ESSEX — Police here are partnering with the Coast Guard Auxiliary this Saturday for a day of boating safety promotions around town.
Boaters will be eligible to receive a special inspection sticker if officials at one of the five event locations inspect the boat and find it complies with all of the boating safety measures, according to police.
Pike Marine, Perkins Marina, Essex Marina and the Essex Police Department parking lot venues will all host events. The inspections take 10 to 15 minutes and reduce the likelihood for an inspected boater to be stopped on the river for a Coast Guard inspection, police said.
Inspections are free and voluntary, police emphasized. Residents are encouraged to bring their boats on trailers, even if the vessels are not yet in the water.
There will be live demonstrations at the town landing and at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum. Also, a free raffle will send some spectators home with free boat launches at a local marina, a new VFW marine handheld radio and personal flotation devices.
The events will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
If the Essex Marine Safety Day is rained out Saturday, it will be rescheduled for Sunday.
