Getting a charge out of education

Beeman Elementary School students got a real charge on Friday afternoon when they welcomed folks from the Museum of Science for a workshop on electromagnetism.

They were especially struck when they learned their own bodies can conduct electricity, when a few of their classmates got shocked via George Pechmann and his van de Graaf generator in a chain reaction as they stood in line together with their hands resting on each other's shoulders.

They learned from Museum educator George Pechmann about static electricity, currents, voltage, various kinds of energy including heat, sound and light.

They saw and felt how some materials make good insulators, and some make good conductors of electricity, as shown with pieces of plastic, wood, titanium, and copper touching the van de Graaf generator.

Finally, they learned about polarity and magnetism, and how capacitors work to store electrical charges, too.
