Gloucester District Court: Trio get probation, continuance on jewelry theft charges

Two Billerica men and a Bedford woman who live in Rockport during the summer were in court Monday on charges that they stole more than $700 worth of jewelry from a Gloucester jewelry store and attempted to return it for cash at a different branch.

Thomas J. McLaughlin, 31, of 11 Janice Road, Billerica, pleaded guilty to charges of larceny and was sentenced to a year's probation by Judge Joseph Jennings.

Stephanie Terenzoni, 20, of 27 Crescent Ave., Bedford, and Matthew Pierce, 22, of 8 Primrose Road, Billerica, had larceny charges continued without a finding for one year.

According to police reports, all three defendants have summer residences in Rockport. All three also had conspiracy charges dismissed at the request of the Commonwealth, and all three have been ordered to pay a yet to be determined amount of restitution.

Gloucester and police detectives were drawn to the incident in July after a manager at Village Silversmith on Main Street notified police that more than $700 worth of jewelry may have been stolen from the Gloucester store.

The company became suspicious when they say two men attempted to "return" jewelry to the store's Rockport branch. According to police reports, the jewelry that the two men — later identified as McLaughlin and Pierce — still had their sales tags on them.

Police then reviewed surveillance footage of the Gloucester store, which showed McLaughlin and Terenzoni enter the store, look around for a minute and then make a phone call.

A short time later, Pierce and another woman — who did not appear in court on charges — also entered the store. Surveillance footage showed the two couples in different ends of the store steal sterling silver rings and necklaces, police said.

David L. Marion, 52, of no known address, Gloucester, was sentenced to a year's suspended jail term and one year's probation after pleading guilty to charges of violating a restraining order.

Marion was charged in September after police say he showed up at an ex-girlfriend's home, violating the order.
