Guests at a wedding reception Saturday night at the Ocean View Inn on Atlantic Avenue got a little more than snapshots of a happy couple and wedding favors to take home.
On the day of his wedding, a New Jersey groom, his brother and his father wound up in jail after an argument turned into a fight. It all started because the father wanted some wine and his sons would not let him have any because they thought he had too much to drink, police said.
The incident prompted all four police units on duty to respond to the inn on the Back Shore.
"My two sons beat me up," the groom's father, Raymond Pattin, 53, of 142 Madison St. in Woodridge, N.J., told police when questioned after the incident.
Police arrested the groom, James Pattin, 24, of 54 Vernon Ave., Hamburg, N.J., his brother, Richard Pattin, 19, of 4 Bunn Road, Hamburg, N.J., and their father and charged them with domestic assault and battery.
Police were called to the inn about 8:30 p.m. after reports of a disturbance. When police arrived, an employee told them that the father and his three sons had been arguing and had gone outside.
Police were led to one of the guest rooms, where they found Raymond Pattin shirtless and bleeding from a cut above his right eye.
The incident began after a third son of Raymond Pattin hid a wine bottle from him because family members believed the father had too much to drink, the police report said.
Enraged about the plot, the father confronted his 16-year-old son. When the teen admitted to taking the wine, Pattin pushed and hit him, the other two brothers told police. The teen later showed police a bruised left eye.
The elder Pattin brothers came to the aid of the teen and took the father outside, where the argument escalated into a fight, the police report said.
After interviewing the father, police then went to another hotel room, where they found the groom and his brother, Richard. They told police their father has a drinking problem and were left with no alternative after the father went after their younger brother.
Police said yesterday the groom and his brother made bail a few hours after the incident, while Raymond Pattin was released yesterday morning.
A woman contacted by the Times at the father's listed telephone number in Woodbridge, N.J., said she had no comment. Telephone calls to the Ocean View Inn seeking comment were not immediately returned. A number listed for James Pattin in Hamburg, N.J., has been disconnected.
