Gloucester man finishes in fifth place at triathlon

Gloucester native and triathlete Janda Ricci-Munn recently turned in his best performance since turning professional earlier this year.

Ricci-Munn finished 5th to Australian world champion Craig Alexander's first at the Subaru 70.3 Muskoka Ironman in Huntsville, Ontario on Sunday. The former Fishermen and UMass-Amherst track and cross-country standout was only the second American to place in the top 10, covering the extremely rugged 70.3 mile swim, bike, and run distance in 4:20:50.

Eighteenth in the male pro division after the 1.2-mile swim, and 61st overall in a field of 1700, Ricci-Munn roared back with the second-fastest bike split of the day to move into ninth place going into the 13.1-mile run, the final segment of the race. With prize money going eight deep in the 40-plus pro field, Ricci-Munn then laid down the event's third-best run, enabling him to move up four more places and earn his second payday in as many races, this one good for $1,500.

Ricci-Munn's race splits, including the transition between the swim and bike, and bike and run: 1.2-mile swim, 30:38; 56-mile bike, 2:27:13; 13.1-mile run, 1:19.09.
