Letter to the editor: Cancer Society thankful for Gloucester area support

To the editor:

On behalf of the American Cancer Society and in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I would like to offer my deep gratitude to the residents and businesses of Greater Gloucester for their generous support of the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer held in Boston last month.

Approximately 35,000 walkers and volunteers participated and raised more than $3 million to fight breast cancer and provide hope for all people facing this disease. I am continuously amazed by the generous spirit of those who support this cause with tremendous effort and dedication.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a chance to celebrate survivorship. I want to applaud the many survivors that led the way. They are our mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, and friends. They are the reason we continue the fight, and they remind us all of a very important message — finding breast cancer early, when it's most treatable, can and does save lives.

A special thanks to the nearly 1,000 volunteers who worked over the course of the weekend to make this event a success. We could not have done it without you.

We also appreciate the generosity of this year's flagship sponsors — AstraZeneca, Aurora Imaging Inc., Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Boston Teachers Union, Cumberland Farms, WeGotSoccer, and media partners MAGIC 106.7 and 7 News on 7NBC and CW56 for their contributions and participation in this year's walk.

Again, thank you for supporting your American Cancer Society. Now more than ever, people are turning to the society for help. If you have outstanding pledges or would like to make a donation, it's not too late.

You can make a gift online at www.cancer.org/stridesonline, click on Massachusetts and select "Boston" or mail contributions to: American Cancer Society, Making Strides, 9 Riverside Road, Weston, MA 02493. The American Cancer Society knows that having cancer is hard, but finding help shouldn't be. Contact us anytime, day or night, for cancer-related information, support, and resources at 1-800-ACS-2345, or visit www.cancer.org.
