Police: Arson suspected in Gloucester house fire

Police suspect arson in an early morning blaze at an abandoned house on Perkins Street.

Police were waved down by a Perkins Street resident who alerted police that smoke was coming from the home at 25 Perkins St.. Police knocked on the front door and received no answer. According to police reports, officers then opened the first-floor door, which was unlocked, and yelled for anybody who might have been in the home. Neighbors told officers the home was vacant, but police said it appeared people had been living in the home, according to the police report.

The Gloucester Fire Department took control of the scene and extinguished the fire. According to police reports, there was an empty gas can next to a small alley way in between two homes, which was where the fire started.

The incident is under investigation by the state fire marshal.
