Artists group offers free film showings

North Shore Arts Association is offering a free film series every Thursday night at 7 this summer. Each week will feature a different art-inspired film that will be shown in association's beautiful Gordon Grant Room Gallery.

The lineup of films that the association has scheduled for June are "Goya's Ghosts" tomorrow, "Surviving Picasso" on June 11, "Basquiat" on June 18 and "Girl With a Pearl Earring" on June 25. The public is invited to bring snacks, bring friends and enjoy these films.

In tomorrow's "Goya's Ghosts," directed by Milos Foreman ("Amadeus"), the painter Goya (Stellan Skarsdard) becomes involved with the Spanish Inquisition when his muse, Ines (Natalie Portman), is arrested by the church for heresy. Her father, Thomas, comes to him hoping that his connection with Brother Lorenzo (Javier Bardem, "No Country for Old Men"), whom he is painting, can secure the release of his daughter.

North Shore Arts Association Assistant gallery director Suzanne Gilbert is especially excited that the group is able to offer this film series in the evenings because that means she's off work and can attend.

"I've only seen a couple of the films we have scheduled, so I plan on coming just to watch. What could be better? The films are free, there is plenty of parking, and you get to watch art films in one of the most beautiful galleries on Cape Ann," Gilbert said.

The arts association is located at 11 Pirates Lane in Gloucester and is open Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. More information, please call 978-283-1857 or visit www.nsarts.org.
