Another state legislative committee is coming to Gloucester tomorrow — one with a local flavor, and one that wants to hear from the local fishing community.
The Legislature's Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies will be at Gloucester's Cruiseport Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of a statewide "listening tour."
The panel, which includes both Senate Assistant Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, and state Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, D-Gloucester, will focus its attention on fisheries and aquaculture, with experts on hand to raise and address the many issues each industry faces.
Speakers expected to take part in the special hearing include fishermen Richard Burgess and Corrado Buccheri, lobsterman Arthur Sawyer, clammer John Montoni, and Gloucester Seafood Display Auction co-owner Larry Ciulla.
Other speakers are expected to include Drs. Mark Fregeau and Joseph Buttner from the Northeast Massachusetts Aquaculture Center at Salem State College.
The hearing comes two weeks after the Legislature's Joint Committee on Education held an oversight hearing at City Hall to hear testimony about the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education's handling and approval of the application for a Gloucester charter school.
