Rockport Rambles: Police honor slain MIT officer

No bonds seem to last longer and hold stronger than those of police officers or members of the armed forces, and Cape Ann officers exemplified that last week.

From Rockport, Officers Phillip Wesley and William Budrow paid their respects to Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer Sean Collier on Wednesday, who authorities say was shot down by one or both of the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings.

More than 5,000 officers from around the state attended his funeral, including officers from Essex.

In other police news, last week, Rockport police Lt. Mark Schmink, who served in the Marine Corps, and Chief John “Tom” McCarthy were also honored with a Patriot Award.

The award, put forth by the Employer Support of the National Guard and Reserve recognizes individual supervisors and bosses nominated by an employee serving in the National Guard or Reserve. Schmink and McCarthy have been flexible with schedules and training, allowing other officers to take the time off to train and serve in the National Guard.

”Everyone who knows me understands my strong feelings and determination regarding our dedicated men and women who serve and protect our country in all of the armed forces, both past and present,” Schmink wrote in an email to the Times. “It was definitely an unexpected surprise to receive this award - but an honor and a privilege to accept.”

Social host liability laws

The Rockport school district also deserves kudos for hosting an informational session on the state’s social host liability laws. While some may believe letting a minor have a drink or two at their home is OK, it could lead to accidents or even death.

On Thursday, May 2, all high school students and their parents are welcome to attend a presentation by Campbell Campbell Edwards & Conroy Trial Lawyers from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the middle high school library. Parents who are involved with prom activities are strongly encouraged to attend.
