Gloucester Police/Fire: Police warn men of drinking crackdown

Police found two men, both listed as homeless, sitting on a rock and drinking alcohol at the Green Street playground Saturday about 9:34 a.m., according to police.

One of the men, 49, dumped a 40-ounce bottle of beer out onto the ground as police approached him, police said. Officers told both him and the other man, a 21-year-old, that public drinking “will not be tolerated anymore” and police will start arresting public drinkers.

Police made the men empty the rest of their beer and clean the mess, according to police. Police said the men will be arrested the next time police find them publicly drinking, but there were no charges filed Saturday.

Police arrested a 49-year-old Shrewsbury man on an outstanding warrant, after encountering the man on Spring Street Sunday about 6:04 p.m., according to police.

Ronald R. Ballou’s arrest was the result of warrants issued for “several” vehicle offenses dating back to 1998 in the Shrewsbury area, according to police.

Police will hold Ballou for the state of Maine for extradition, police said.

Police responded to “multiple” calls reporting a fight inside a Ferry Street home Sunday about 4:29 p.m., but residents told officers the fight was only verbal in nature, police said.

Police noted that the people involved were “uncooperative” with police, and said the whole argument was about a deck railing and whether the railing was safe. There were no charges.

Police secured a firearm that a patron had left in a motel room at the Cape Ann Marina Saturday about 9:46 a.m.

A Connecticut man had forgotten the firearm in the room, and police secured the gun, ran it through a check, then returned it to the owner after checking his license to carry, police said.

Animal control was notified of a dead seal carcass on Niles Beach Friday about 4:54 p.m., according to police.

Police transported a woman from Sugar Magnolia’s restaurant on Main Street to Beverly Hospital Sunday about 11:56 a.m., according to police.
