---- — A Gloucester woman will receive an award and be feted by local Democrats this weekend.

The Gloucester Democratic City Committee recently announced that Catherine Bayliss is the 2013 recipient of its Charles J. McCarthy Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award will be presented at the commitee’s annual brunch to be held Sunday, May 5, at The Tavern on the Harbor in Gloucester. Local, state and national Democratic officials kick off the annual political season at the yearly event.

The award, created in 2009 to honor Charles McCarthy’s service to his community and to the Democratic Party, is given to someone who embodies and quietly displays outstanding examples of individual accomplishment, longtime active participation in the political process and dedication to the values of the Democratic Party.

The award, symbolized by an oak tree, is intended to recognize the contributions of a person who sows “acorns of leadership” that will continue growth of these same values far into the future.

Bayliss followed McCarthy as chairman of the Gloucester Democratic City Committee and built on his foundation.

Bayliss grew up in downtown Gloucester and attended Gloucester public schools. She went to Wellesley College on scholarship and graduated in 1970. Persuaded to attend a Gloucester Democratic City Committee meeting by her author activist father, Jonathan Bayliss, she soon became its secretary, a position she held for four years while Charles McCarthy was still chairman.

She succeeded McCarthy as chairman in 2004, serving the maximum four consecutive terms permitted by the bylaws.

Bayliss initiated many of the committee’s ongoing activities, including “Democratic Dialogue,” a monthly local public-access TV program, and “First Saturday with Obama,” a monthly informal gathering.

She is a member of the Democratic State Committee and its executive committee.
