Broken valve brings downtown water shutdown

GLOUCESTER — A broken gate valve in a downtown water main this afternoon has forced city offocials to shut down water service along Main Street from Washington to Hancock streets, beginning at 5 and extending to 9 p.m.

Department of Public Works director Mike Hale said this aftrenoon that the problem was found as a part of the larger construction at Tally’s Corner, the intersection of Main, Washington and Commercial streets.

Water was also temporarily shut down along Commercial Street, Beach Court and Fort square from about 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. today until water could be rerouted back to the area, Hale said.

He added that work is currently under way to replace and fix the broken valve.

Hale said that valves are commonly replaced, but he could not readily give the exact cost of the part since the cost may vary. While the work on the intersection itself was scheduled, the water shutoff was not.
