---- — Anyone looking to enjoy an evening of appetizers by the sea and help raise money for the first Rockport fireworks show this summer is welcome to attend a special event at My Place by The Sea restaurant on Bearskin Neck, hosted by co-owners Kathy Milbury and Barbara Stavropoulos Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Tickets for the benefit are priced at $25, with proceeds going to help fund this summer’s planned first-ever fireworks show in Rockport. The evening, timed to allow visitors to enjoy My Place’s sunset viewing as well, will include hors d’oeuvres, and cocktails will be available.

In case of rain, a new date will be scheduled.

EMS showcase benefits West

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings last month, one thing that may have been overlooked by New Englanders is the explosion in West, Texas, that killed dozens and injured hundreds more.

Recognizing that Rockport and West are both served by an on-call, volunteer emergency service, the Rockport Ambulance Committee has set aside the 18th annual EMS Day Sunday as a fund-raiser for the families and victims of the West explosion.

With that in mind, all are welcome to visit the Department of Public Works building on Main Street Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., to offer their support, enjoy a cookout, check out the EMS vehicles, learn CPR training and much more.

Summertime fun in Rockport

With summer right around the corner, the Rockport Recreation Department is turning up the heat this year with more events and activities than ever before, says director Donna Higgins.

For the first time, two adult kayaking trips are planned to Thacher and Straitsmouth Islands.

Various programs for middle school students are also planned; including a babysitting course, art classes, tennis and indoor soccer and basketball, and a book club and a scavenger hunt toward the end of year.

Millbrook Dam ceremonies

The town of Rockport will commemorate its new $1.3 milliion dam with a ceremony being planned for Saturday, May 25. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m.

State Sen. Bruce Tarr, State Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, the town’s selectmen and Department of Public workers will all share the duty of cutting the ribbon across the dam.

The Madrigal Choir from Rockport Schools and Rockport’s Lighthouse Brass Quintet will provide the music.
