Crossing DUI case lands man in jail

A 29-year-old Malden man has been ordered to serve jail time and pay $1,300 in fees and assessment on charges of a second drunken driving offense, child endangerment while driving drunk and negligent operation after he pleaded guilty to each of those charges Tuesday in Gloucester District Court.

According to Gloucester police, Michael D. Coveney had been arrested in October after an employee at a Gloucester Crossing store reported a man who drove away from the store with a child in the vehicle seemed intoxicated. Police following that tip found Coveney exiting his vehicle at a Norman Avenue home and arrested him there.

The bulk of the jail time and fine stems from the charge of child endangerment while drunken driving. Judge Joseph Jennings sentenced Coveney to 90 days in Middleton Jail, with 32 of those days to be served and the balance suspended for two years on that charge. Of the $1,300 in fees and fine, $1,000 was applied on that charge.

The drunken driving charge earned Coveney a sentence of 6 months in Middleton Jail, with 32 days to be served and already deemed served and the balance suspended two years. During that time, Coveney will remain on probation and be subject to random drug and alcohol screenings. Coveney’s license will be revoked for two years and he must attend education programs.

Coveney was also charged with assault and battery after allegedly pushing a woman at a Norman Avenue home in December, pleaded guilty and was found guilty on the charge at a pretrial hearing Monday. He was ordered to pay a $50 fee and told to stay drug and alcohol free as he will be subject to random screens for substances.
