Gloucester Police/Fire: Smoker ignites traffic stop, charge

Chance glance between a passenger in a car and an officer driving a cruiser resulted in a traffic stop.

Police filed a criminal complaint against 22-year-old Lexington Avenue woman on a charge of driving a vehicle without a driver’s license after stopping her because one of her passengers was allegedly smoking marijuana.

Alyssa Nikohl Bennett was stopped on Magnolia Avenue, according to police, when the officer saw one of her passengers using a lighter to ignite what was in the pipe he was holding.

The officer issued a citation to the passenger, a Newbury man, who surrendered his smoking pipe.

The police department’s K-9, Mako, checked the vehicle for more marijuana, but found none. Police had the vehicle towed.

Police arrested a 26-year-old Gloucester man wanted on a default warrant after stopping him Thursday about 2:02 p.m. while he was driving a vehicle with an expired inspection sticker.

Besides being taken into custody, Bryan D. Clancy of East Main Street was issued a citation for the expired sticker.

An officer drove a woman and her 1-year-old child to an Allen Street residence after the woman’s car failed to start on Eastern Avenue on Thursday about 12:44 p.m. Police said Tally’s towed the vehicle.
