Fishermen christen 'new' Newell Stadium with 15-14 win

A 24-yard field goal by Eli Horne with 2:20 left in the third quarter snapped a 12-12 tie and carried the Gloucester High Fishermen to a dramatic 15-14 win over Lynn Classical Friday night before an estimated crowd of more than 3,500 fans in the opening night of the “new” Newell Stadium.

The win capped a banner grand opening at the newly reconstructed $3.5 million stadium, with colorful ceremonies kicking off the evening, and the Fishermen’s win over Classical topping off the night.

Gloucester had opened the scoring on a 10-yard run around the left side by John Curcuru in the first quarter, and after Classical tied it 6-6, Jordan Pallazola scored on a two-yard plunge late in the first half, which ended at 12-12.

Horne’s kick — the first GHS field goal since 2008 — then gave the Fishermen a 15-12 lead, and Gloucester held on, taking an intentional safety in the last two minutes rather than punting from the Fishermen’s own end zone.
