Police shoot Danvers robbery suspect

Staff writer

Police shot and injured a robbery suspect last night at the Avalon Danvers apartment complex, according to Danvers police.

No police officers were injured, and police have not released the names of the suspect or the officer involved.

At 9:52 p.m. Thursday, police responded to a report of an assault at the 5000 block of Kirkbride Drive at the redeveloped Danvers State Hospital on Hathorne Hill, according to a statement from police Chief Neil Ouellette.

Police investigated and found that a robbery had occurred.

"As officers were attempting to place the suspect into custody for that, as well as existing trial court warrants, an officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was shot," Ouellette said.

Police have not said to what extent the suspect was injured or where he was taken for treatment.

Danvers police, the Essex County District Attorney's office and the State Police are investigating.

A security guard parked at the base of Kirkbride Drive stopped a reporter attempting to access the complex because it was private property. He referred all comments to the management office, where a message was left seeking comment.

Police said area residents should not be concerned about their safety because the initial assault was not a random event.
