---- — A 52-year-old man was arrested at his Washington Street home on charges of assault and battery Monday about 6:55 p.m.

Charles F. Markee was arrested in his home after allegedly punching a woman under her eye during an argument.

Police said Markee denied hitting the woman, but officers noted a blossoming bruise below the woman’s eye, according to the police report.

A man who was discovered unconscious outside of the VFW Monday about 7:20 p.m., just 10 minutes after leaving the hall to await a ride home, was later transported to a hospital by helicopter.

Witnesses found the 75-year-old Gloucester man face down on the steps of the building and bleeding from the head. An ambulance transported him to Addison Gilbert Hospital, and a medical helicopter later transported him to a hospital outside of the city.

Further information on his condition was not immediately available Tuesday.

Police requested the Department of Public Works clean up the area at the end of Dogtown Road, where police believe an underage drinking party had occurred over the weekend.
