Gloucester Police/Fire: 'Lost' driver issued pot citation

Gloucester Police/Fire

A man who told police he was driving in Gloucester because he got lost on a trip from Fitchburg to Chelsea was civilly cited for marijuana possession after police who stopped him for driving unusually slowly with an outed taillight, smelled marijuana in his vehicle.

The driver admitted to smoking a “blunt” in the vehicle while driving in Fitchburg. He and a passenger voluntarily surrendered a bag containing “several” grams of marijuana.

Police said the driver passed a “brief” roadside test to check for impairment and was sent on his way with a civil citation for marijuana possession and a verbal warning for the non-functional taillight.

Police responded after receiving complaints about parents smoking and littering cigarette butts near the Mill Condos at 33 Maplewood Ave. when dropping their children at the bus stop.

Officers asked those parents Thursday morning to stay away from the condos while smoking, and the parents complied.

Firefighters believe a fire in that area last winter was sparked by a stray cigarette butt that had not been completely stamped out before it was discarded.

Two tractor-trailer trucks became “intertwined” on East Main Street Thursday about 9:30 a.m., after a truck turned incorrectly and struck a parked tractor trailer unit, according to police. Tally’s responded and was able to untangle the two vehicles and, while both were damaged, drivers were able to drive away.

State police issued a citation for an improper lane change as part of a response to a two-vehicle accident on the Blackburn Circle just after noon Thursday.

State police said no one involved was transported to a hospital, and that both drivers live in Gloucester. At least one vehicle was towed from the scene.
