Former Gloucester School Committee member Nancy Harrison has confirmed she will return to the committee in August to fill the seat being vacated by Amy-Beth Healey.
Harrison was the only candidate on last year's School Committee ballot not to win a spot on the committee, and the city charter calls for all mid-term vacancies on the committee to be offered to the next highest finisher in the previous election.
Harrison, a former special education teacher and nursery school owner, served on the School Committee from 2008 until the end of last year when she finished seventh in a race for six spots.
Healey announced last Wednesday that she was stepping down from the committee for health reasons effective Aug. 15.
A day later, School Committee Chairwoman Val Gilman e-mailed Harrison and offered her the seat and on Sunday she confirmed to the Times that she would re-join the committee.
Gilman in an e-mail sent Sunday to other committee members said that Harrison has accepted the post and "is eager to get up to speed on the activities of the committee since her departure."
"As a returning member of the Gloucester School committee, I am confident that she will be ready to roll up her sleeves and get back to work as soon as possible," Gilman said.
