Essex Police/Fire: Harbormasters tow distressed vessel to safety

ESSEX — Town harbormasters came to the aid of a vessel in distress Tuesday.

The vessel, off Essex Bay, reported major overdrive failure of its engine and asked for aid.

Gloucester harbormasters could not respond because they were tied up with several incidents caused by day's large waves. Essex police Chief Peter G. Silva, the town harbormaster, and Wesley Burnham, an assistant harbormaster, responded to the distress call and towed the vessel in to the Essex Town Landing.

Silva said no one on the vessel was injured.

Watch your driving

Police here are writing more traffic tickets as part of campaign aimed at taking drunken drivers off the road.

The stepped-up enforcement is part of a national campaign, "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit, Under Arrest," and is being paid for with a grant the Essex Police Department received from the Governor's Highway Safety Council.

The push began last weekend and will continue the Labor Day weekend.

Other incidents

A woman walked into the station at 11:01 a.m. Tuesday to report receiving three "strange" phone calls in the last two weeks. Police are investigating.

At 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, the Fire Department ambulance was called to a Sumac Drive residence. The rescue crew transported a female to Beverly Hospital.

Police received a report of a domestic dispute over the custody of child Tuesday at 7:16 p.m. The couple agreed to allow the child to stay with the mother and to try to solve the issue on Wednesday.
