Striper, bluefish titles to be awarded Saturday

Editor's note: Attached to this story are photos of two winners, who were misidentified. The identifications are now correct.

Dylan Genovese, 15, of Gloucester was barely able to hold his prize-winning, 33.15-pound striped bass.

He and other winners in Winchester Fishing Co.’s 22nd annual Blue Fish and Striped Bass Tournament will receive their prizes Saturday at the awards ceremony at the company at 18 Washington St

The party is open to the public, and if past parties are a guide, this one is worth attending for the stories, tales and good cheer.

For his striper, the largest weighed in the age 15 and under category, Genovese will take home a $200 gift certificate and a trophy.

The winning striper in the adult category, a 47.6-pounder, was caught by Russ Burgess of Revere, making him a four-time winner. Burgess will pocket $1,000 and a trophy.

The winning bluefish in the adult category was a 13.7-pounder caught by Roger Brisson of Danvers. The fish earned Brisson an $800 cash prize and a trophy.

The winning bluefish in the 15 and under category was a 12.65-pounder caught by 13-year-old Nathan Noonan of Gloucester. His fish brings him a $200 gift certificate and a trophy. Noonan also captured 6th place in the children’s striper category, which means another trophy and $25 in gear.

Dick Winchester, who launched and sponsors the tournament, said fishing continues strong for both inshore migratory species. He said the 2012 season was characterized by an unusual, long pulse of squid which filled the harbor and showed up around the shores luring the fish in but also creating competition for bait and plug casters.

In a typical year, the stripers and blues will be feeding around Cape Ann through the middle of October.
