Bash for Rockport bookstore at Shalin Liu

ROCKPORT — In a one-hour event, Toad Hall, Rockport’s independent and nonprofit bookstore, will celebrate its special place in the Cape Ann community on Columbus Day.

The bookstore will host a family-friendly birthday party from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 8, on the third floor of the Shalin Liu Performance Center at 37 Main St. in Rockport. The book shop donates its profits to local environmental causes. The party will feature several noted authors, students and musicians. Among the guest speakers are some of the area’s most treasured authors: Anita Diamant, Rodman Philbrick, Jonathan Strong, Anita Sanchez and Pat Lowery Collins.

Singer-songwriter Cormac McCarthy, a folk artist, will perform songs from his new album. Singer-songwriter Jennifer Evans, known for her voice and evocative songs, also will perform. Students will stage a dramatic reading of one of Philbrick’s books. Philbrick, who will host this event, was awarded a Newbury Honor award for “The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg.”

After a happy birthday sing-along, birthday cake will be served. Authors and musicians will sell and sign books and CDs. All are welcome.

The price of admission is a used book to go on Toad Hall’s used book table. Cash donations are gratefully accepted. For information, contact Toad Hall at 978-546-7323.
