Rockport student reaches out for shaving' cancer benefit

ROCKPORT — A Rockport woman who is a student at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., will be shaving her head when she returns to school from her winter break — and it's all for a good cause.

Maya Cameron-Gilsey, a 21-year-old St. Lawrence senior, is part of a fund-raiser called Clips for Cancer, and is seeking to line up pledges in her hometown to support her efforts.

"I am shaving my head to raise money," she said, "but also because my bald head will be a display of solidarity with kids who have cancer."

Her hair will be donated to Wigs for Kids, and the money raised will be donated to two funds at the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital.

The first is the Family Assistance Fund, which helps family's with child cancer patients pay bills among other things, she said. The second fund is the The Kids with Cancer fund which helps pay for educational and entertainment experiences for children with cancer in the hospital.

"I chose this hospital because it serves children in the county I go to school in," she said. "After spending almost four years in Canton, I have come to have a strong connection with this area and the community and would like to give back."

Cameron-Gilsey said she has set a goal of $10,000 for her project, and is hoping to draw support from Rockporters along the way.

"Many families cannot afford care and this hospital accepts them regardless of this," she said. "I have set a goal of ten thousand dollars to raise and hopefully I can pull this off.

"I am trying to raise a lot of money and need all the help I can get," she added, "and I am hoping my community can help me reach my goal."

Anyone willing to sponsor or contribute to Cameron-Gilsey's effort may do so by sending a check to: Maya Cameron-Gilsey, re: Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, 5 Pioneer Circle, Rockport, MA. 01966, or donors can visit her Web site — http://mayabebald.weebly.com — and click the donate button through PayPal.
