Triton loses another administrator as Farmer takes over

BYFIELD — The leadership of the Triton Regional School District will undergo more turnover than just the advent of Christopher Farmer of Gloucester as superintendent. Now Kathleen Willis, the district's assistant superintendent, has said she is leaving.

Willis, who has been with the district for 30 years, has accepted a position as superintendent in North Reading, effective July 1. Willis will finish out the school year with Triton.

Ed Mavragis, chairman of the Triton Regional School Committee, said that Willis leaving will be a tremendous loss for Triton.

"Imagine spending your whole career at one place and still being so highly regarded as being a positive, high-energy person who is intelligent, articulate and always patient and calm. I have a lot of respect for her and wish her well in her new position. North Reading is getting a gem."

The district will welcome many new leaders in the next school year: Farmer, Triton's new superintendent; a new principal at Newbury Elementary School, for whom a search is underway; and a new assistant principal at Newbury Elementary School, where a search will commence when the new principal is selected.

It's not known whether Willis applied for the Triton top job.

Willis was one of three finalists for the North Reading position. Willis interviewed with the North Reading School Committee on April 13 and was offered the position Thursday night.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my 30 years here at Triton," Willis said. "When I heard that the superintendent position was opening up in North Reading, I did some research and found that it is a wonderful school district similar to Triton's. I... look forward to the new challenges of being superintendent there."
