The Adventurer and the Estrela were among the schooners that joined the Spirit of Bermuda in the winner's circle in the Gloucester Schooner Festival races over Labor Day Weekend.
The Spirit of Bermuda, skippered by Simon Colley, captured the marquee title by winning the Mayor's Race and Esperanto's Cup for large schooners in an elapsed time of 2 hours, 7 minutes and 9 seconds.
That was nearly 22 minutes faster than the runner-up Summerwind, which finished second in 2:29:07. The Alabama was third in 2:42:08, with the Liberty Clipper placing fourth in 3:17:00.
The Adventurer, with skipper Mark Faulstick and a time of 2:26:10, won the Class 2 race for "small schooners," and took home the Ned Cameron Cup by beating out Gloucester's own Thomas E. Lannon, captained by Tom Ellis. The Lannon's time was 3:17:00.
In the "little schooners" division, the Estrela, with Bruce Davies at the helm, earned the Betty Ramsey Plate with a time of 2:09:00, beating out the Bald Eagle captained by Judith Nast and the Lewis H. Story, skippered by Bob Quadros.
In Saturday's traditional small craft races, Thad Danielson and the Sea Harmony won the Traditional Gaffed-Rigged division with a time of 2:40:02, ahead of Teaka Simon and Kate Koch.
The Spirit, with Fred Young, won the PHRF Fleet title with a clocking of 1:36:29, besting the Amazing Grace captained by Hoff Stauffer, the Dove, with Eric Borhnofft, and Mischief, with Fred Shrigley.
All the races went off after the threat of Hurricane and then Tropical Storm Earl dealt Gloucester and Cape Ann just a light brush with rain and wind overnight Friday into Saturday morning.
