    Virginia Beach, Va — Anna R. Almeida, 89, of Virginia Beach Va. passed away on May 17, 2012. She was born to Ralph and Jenny (Dagley) Selig on Feb. 19, 1923. Anna attended Gloucester schools and worked at Gorton’s of Gloucester until retiring. Anna was the matriarch of a large loving family, all of whom will miss her very much.

    Born in Gloucester on March 13, 1926, he was the son of the late Harold C. and Marjorie F. (Garron) Tarr. A lifelong resident of Gloucester, he was a graduate of Gloucester High School, where he played trombone in the high school dance band and later played in the Legion band.

    Barbara Garcia de Castro, age 89, died peacefully at her home in Hamilton, surrounded by loving friends and family. Her joie de vivre and strong will to live a full and independent life allowed her last years with her beloved cats in her own cozy cottage. Her independent lifestyle was supported by her loving caregivers; Gerry Flammia, Patti Neal, and devoted family. She was truly invested in embracing a multi-generational lifestyle in her wiser years. Living more independently allowed her a natural connection to her grandnieces and nephews; Peter, Chris, Samantha, Amy, Gator, Emily, Melli, Madison, and Spencer. She was also visited regularly by her lifelong friend, Dottie Eagleson, to sing their favorite songs and share childhood memories.

    William Francis Mamede, Jr., passed away suddenly at his home on May 3, 2012. He was born on January 19, 1951. Bill was the youngest man in the tuna fisheries to attain the rating of Chief Engineer, and he fished out of Somora. He attended school in San Diego, CA. Gloucester, MA and Las Vegas, NV. Bill is survived by his mother, Cora Montez Brown, and his uncle, John Sutton of Gloucester, MA. He is also survived by his special cousins, Jim Lobel of San Diego and Margaret York of Gloucester, Ma. In addition he is also survived by many cousins, nephews and nieces along with many friends. Bill is preceded in death by his brother, Marlo Mamede, who was lost at sea, his father, William F. Mamede of San Diego, CA. and his stepfather. Ralph K. Brown of Gloucester, MA.

    Phyllis Johnson Nelson, a Cape Ann native, died at her home in Boca Raton, FL on April 30, 2012 at the age of 83. She was predeceased in 2002 by her husband, Edwin A. Nelson, Jr. Mrs. Nelson was born in Gloucester on September 14, 1928. She was a graduate of the New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and Stonehill College, from which she received her bachelor of arts degree cum laude in 1976. Mrs. Nelson received a master of education degree in 1980 from Florida Atlantic University.

    Dorothy May (Lee) Teceno, aged 78 years, lifelong resident of Middleboro, died on Tuesday, May 08, 2012, at her home, after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert C Teceno, who predeceased her in June of 2010. Born in Middleboro, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Agnes M (Cameron) Lee. Dorothy had worked for many years at Winthrop Atkins, Middleboro, and had also worked in the cafeteria for the Middleboro Public School System. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Middleboro. Survivors include three sons, Karl and his wife Denise Teceno of Portland, ME, John and his wife Dianne Teceno of Middleboro, Peter and his wife Jennie Teceno of Middleboro, a daughter, Beth and her husband Jon Lafata of Gloucester, MA, 9 grandchildren, Haakon, Erin, Logan, Kyle, Nathan, Trina, Emma, Rachel, and Connor, 3 great-grandchildren, Hakon, Wryley, and Bella. She was grandmother of the late Joshua Teceno.

    With four fire stations, 63 on-the-line firefighters and a tightening fiscal climate, his fire department in Westland, Mich., faces some of the same pressures that Gloucester's does.
    Eric Smith, the Westland deputy chief on track to serve as Gloucester's next permanent fire chief, said that finding ways now to keep this city's outlying fire stations open with reduced funding and staff is on the top of his list when he gets to Cape Ann.

The Fishermen dropped their early season matchup with the Falcons by 12 goals and nearly pulled off a win Tuesday. Gloucester's season comes to an end at 5-13, a five win improvement over the 2011 season.

  • Heavenly hamburgers It is estimated that 13 billion hamburgers are consumed every year. Who invented the hamburger sandwich? The legend is that Louis' Lunch in New Haven Connecticut is where the hamburger sandwich was created in 1895. The story goes that Louis Lassen, the proprietor, was grinding some leftover beef trimmings and a customer came in and said he wanted something he could eat on the run and that could be cooked right away. Louis grabbed his ground beef, cooked it and served between two pieces of bread.
