Ipswich — Josephine Day Laughlin, 70, of Agawam Village, died Tuesday, September 11, 2012 in her home following a long illness.
Born in Worcester September 14, 1941, daughter of the late Sidney I. and Josephine H. ( Davis ) Day she was raised on her family's lake property in Sterling, where her mother taught many locals to ride horses, some of whom still live in town and remember her. Josephine was Sterling Apple Queen at the age of thirteen and graduated Wachusett Regional High School in 1960. She was a member of Civil Air Patrol in the early 1960s. She graduated Worcester State College in 2006 after working on her degree for almost thirty years, and won several awards for her poetry, including one in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where her poem was printed on buses in town. She raised her daughters in Tulsa, and Norman, Oklahoma, and was an LPN for forty years, working in pediatrics and geriatrics. She was beloved by the families of her patients for her kind and loving care. Jo was always interested in nature, literature and spirituality and loved to share what she had learned with others. She had a very loving spirit and many who knew her were touched by her blessings.
She is survived by two daughters, Laura Burke of Conifer, CO and Katherine Pyburn and her husband Dennis II of Essex; three grandsons, Benjamin Burke of New Jersey, and Dennis Pyburn III and Kenneth Pyburn both of Essex and beloved nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial funeral service will be held at 10am Saturday, September 15, 2012 in the Ascension Memorial Church, 31 County Street , Ipswich . Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Interment in the Vine Lake Cemetery, Medfield will be private. Arrangements by the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
