Grace F. (Carr) Matthews, 99

Grace F. (Carr) Matthews, 99, of Rockport, formerly of Lake Worth, Florida, wife of the late John L. “Les” Matthews, passed away on Wednesday evening, February 15, 2012 at Den Mar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Waltham, MA on April 12, 1912, daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget (Greaney) Carr.

Grace was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Waltham, with the Class of 1930.

Before moving to Rockport, MA, she had resided for 35 years in Lake Worth, Florida.

Grace enjoyed her grandchildren, ice skating, playing cards, bingo, knitting and riding her 3 wheeled bicycle. She was also an avid reader.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Julia Rizzello and her husband John of Rockport; her son, John Robert Matthews and his wife Dolores “Dee” of Murphy, NC; 4 grandchildren, J. L. Matthews and his wife Kimberly of Harper Ferry, WV, James Matthews and his wife Cristina of West Palm Beach, FL, Paul Matthews and his wife Marcy and Timothy Matthews and his wife Alison all of Loxahatchee, FL; 10 great-grandchildren, Gregory Matthews, Scott Matthews, Nicholas Matthews, Amanda Matthews, Emily Matthews, Jake Matthews, John Robert Matthews, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Matthews, Michael Matthews and Kailee Matthews and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by 4 sisters, Anna Manning, Mary Cahalan, Catherine Conway and Gertrude McIntire and 4 brothers, Joseph Carr, Jack Carr, Jay Carr and Bob Carr.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her Memorial Mass will be celebrated in St. Joachim’s Church, Holy Family Parish on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.

There will be no visiting hours and the burial will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Rose Baker Senior Center (Social Day Care Program), 6 Manuel F. Lewis St., Gloucester, MA 01930 or to a favorite charity of your choice.

Her independent lifestyle was supported by her loving caregivers; Gerry Flammia, Patti Neal, and devoted family. She was truly invested in embracing a multi-generational lifestyle in her wiser years. Living more independently allowed her a natural connection to her grandnieces and nephews; Peter, Chris, Samantha, Amy, Gator, Emily, Melli, Madison, and Spencer. She was also visited regularly by her lifelong friend, Dottie Eagleson, to sing their favorite songs and share childhood memories.

    William Francis Mamede, Jr., passed away suddenly at his home on May 3, 2012. He was born on January 19, 1951. Bill was the youngest man in the tuna fisheries to attain the rating of Chief Engineer, and he fished out of Somora. He attended school in San Diego, CA. Gloucester, MA and Las Vegas, NV. Bill is survived by his mother, Cora Montez Brown, and his uncle, John Sutton of Gloucester, MA. He is also survived by his special cousins, Jim Lobel of San Diego and Margaret York of Gloucester, Ma. In addition he is also survived by many cousins, nephews and nieces along with many friends. Bill is preceded in death by his brother, Marlo Mamede, who was lost at sea, his father, William F. Mamede of San Diego, CA. and his stepfather. Ralph K. Brown of Gloucester, MA.

Nelson, Jr. Mrs. Nelson was born in Gloucester on September 14, 1928. She was a graduate of the New England Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and Stonehill College, from which she received her bachelor of arts degree cum laude in 1976. Mrs. Nelson received a master of education degree in 1980 from Florida Atlantic University.

    Dorothy May (Lee) Teceno, aged 78 years, lifelong resident of Middleboro, died on Tuesday, May 08, 2012, at her home, after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert C Teceno, who predeceased her in June of 2010. Born in Middleboro, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Agnes M (Cameron) Lee. Dorothy had worked for many years at Winthrop Atkins, Middleboro, and had also worked in the cafeteria for the Middleboro Public School System. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Middleboro. Survivors include three sons, Karl and his wife Denise Teceno of Portland, ME, John and his wife Dianne Teceno of Middleboro, Peter and his wife Jennie Teceno of Middleboro, a daughter, Beth and her husband Jon Lafata of Gloucester, MA, 9 grandchildren, Haakon, Erin, Logan, Kyle, Nathan, Trina, Emma, Rachel, and Connor, 3 great-grandchildren, Hakon, Wryley, and Bella. She was grandmother of the late Joshua Teceno.

    The occasion is a denaming and renaming ceremony of new vessel, a replacement for Lee's 44-foot Ocean Reporter that ran into rocks behind Straitsmouth Island last Oct. 26 while carrying a National Geographic film crew that was shooting stock footage of Thacher Island's twin lighthouses.

    The renovated 138-passenger cruise ship Yorktown, due to arrive and dock at Cruiseport Gloucester today at 4 p.m., according to Cruiseport operator Sheree DeLorenzo, will depart Friday from Gloucester Harbor at 7 p.m., carrying passengers on its inaugural voyage for a two-week trip to and through the Canadian Maritimes.

  • DOT chief kicks off Chamber 'Power' series When the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce kicked off its new "power luncheon" series at the Elks at Bass Rocks on Wednesday, it did so by featuring one of Gov. Deval Patrick's key cabinet leaders.
    Richard Davey, the state's Secretary of Transportation and the CEO of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, told the gathering of more than 75 that he recognizes the state of the state's roads is not good, and said that while the state is investing in improvements, it is not at the level needed to address the state's needs.
