Christine M. (Messenger) Powers, 99, of South Hamilton, MA formerly of Rockport, wife of the late Joseph Gerald Powers, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 6, 2012 at the Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Beverly.
She was born in Haverhill, MA on December 14, 1912, daughter of the late Frederick C. Messenger and Emily (Callahan) Messenger.
She was a graduate of Quincy High School, Class of circa 1930. Christine was employed for over 30 years as the Office Manager for the Law Firm of Sandler, Sandler and Laramee.
She was involved with the management of many Gloucester fishing vessels, and their accounts, for the firm. Her enthusiastic involvement and love for the fishing community continued after retirement and well into her 80's.
Christine was an avid reader and loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was among the oldest living residents in Hamilton.
Christine will be greatly loved and missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Powers and her partner, Joseph V. Sargent Jr.; her grandchildren, Brendan Powers O’Donnell and Caitlin Powers O’Donnell of South Hamilton; granddaughters, Linda J. Allen and her fiancé Anthony Lattof, Barbara Lee Tatu, Christine DeMarco and her partner Scott Silva; great-grandchildren, Jill Allen, Joseph Allen, Anthony Lattof, Jr., Jenna Murphy, Michael Tatu and wife Diana; Jason Tatu and Nicholas Tatu; Maylin McGillvray; Emily Provost and Scott Silva, Jr.; great-great grandchildren, Jason McGaughlin, Liana Ploude, Jae-dyn Ploude, Kamryn Allen, Gianna Allen, Justace Allen, Joseph Allen, Jr., Lukas Dills, Jeremy Dills, Kiara Ayers, Madison Tatu, Jayson Tatu and Alizay Tatu; nieces, Carrie A. Philbrook, Rosalind Prindle, Gladylou Veinotte and husband Kevin, Beth Crippen and husband Michael; nephews, Bill Philbrook and husband Glen Pachecl, Michael Pallazolla, Andrew Philbrook and wife Tina and Dennis Purdy; close family friends, Mannie Marques III of Gloucester and Adam Crossley of the England.
She was predeceased by her loving son, Joseph DeMarco.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester on Thursday, April 12, at 9: 15 am. followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Gloucester at 10:00 am. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. The burial will be held in Locust Grove Cemetery, Gloucester.
