Marjorie G. “Marge” (Coull) Sutherland, 80, wife of the late Paul C. Sutherland Sr., of Gloucester, passed away on Thursday morning, April 26, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness.
Born in Gloucester on October 29, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Helen (Gibbs) Coull.
As a young lady, Marge had worked at LePage’s and at the former Steven’s Motors as a bookkeeper. She later worked at Sutherland’s Exxon Station with her husband Paul. Marge’s main career was that of a supporting military wife and mother making sure her family was packed every two years to move to a new Army base to make a new “home” each time, while making sure that her family always kept their Gloucester roots.
In her later years, Marge enjoyed shopping and taking trips with her friends to North Conway and Cape Cod. And it wouldn’t be a holiday if Johnny Mathis music wasn’t playing and the rest of the year everyone could count on happy hour at 4:00 pm with Marge.
Marge was a very kind and loving lady who worked hard raising her family. Her kind heartedness extended to a very special bond developed with the Rose family. Her devotion to her family and her strength will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
She is survived by her four children, Roberta Sutherland and Kenneth Aptt Jr., Peter Sutherland and wife Donna, Ellen Flaherty, Paul Sutherland Jr. and wife Mary Jo; grandchildren, Hannah and Juliann Flaherty, Lauren and Paul Sutherland III, Jen Aiello, Brian and Maryann Aiello, Travis Aptt; great grandchildren Izabella Flaherty, Daniella, Joseph, Anthony and Brianna Aiello, Tyler Aptt; her sister Nancy Wilson and husband Jud; sisters-in-law Priscilla Coull, Helen Sutherland; many nieces, nephews, god children and special god children Joan, Patti, Carol, Lori and best friends Joan Rose and Claire Fosberry.
In addition to her husband Paul, she was predeceased by her brother Robert Coull Jr.; sisters-in-law Ruth McLean, Mary King; and brothers-in-law Joseph, Richard and Donald Sutherland.
