Gloucester, MA — Vito Asaro, 84, of Gloucester, husband of Rosemarie (Scola) Asaro, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 25, 2013. Vito was born in Gloucester, Mass., on April 1, 1929, the son of the late Peter and Catherine (Ciarametaro) Asaro. He attended Gloucester High School and as a young adult crisscrossed the country, living and working in many places, including San Pedro, Calif., before returning to Gloucester, where at the age of 26 he met and married his beautiful wife. He was a welder for Industrial Cab Co. of Essex for many years, worked at the railways for a bit and finished his working life at Gloucester Engineering. He enjoyed many years of traveling with his wife across the U.S. and Hawaii. His family has hours of cherished home movies thanks to his dedication to capturing the many memories of their lives. He loved watching sports, especially the Red Sox and Patriots. He spent many happy times with his abundant family, especially Sunday dinners and holiday parties. In his later years he enjoyed trips to Foxwoods, playing at Lucky Seven and hanging out with the "Beach Boys" of Central Grammar Apartments. He will be sorely missed by his loving family and many friends. He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie, with whom he had shared 58 years of marriage; two daughters, Jane Hartson and her husband, Donald, of Buzzards Bay, Mass., Susan Jacques and her husband, Jeff, of Gloucester; four sons, Mark Asaro and his wife, Paula, Glen Asaro and his wife, Sheri, Steven Asaro and his wife, Christine, all of Gloucester, and David Asaro of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren, Timothy and his wife, Eleni, Jacqui and and her husband, Joe, Nicole and her wife, Elizabeth, Peter, Molly, Jaime-Lee, Lindsey, Kayla, Glen, Ken, Samuel, Emily, Catherine, Sebastian, Victoria, Margaret, Harrison, Isaac, Hannah, and Henry; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jude, Jovie, Hannah, Sophia, Preston, Noah; brothers, Samuel Asaro and his wife, Louisa, Daniel Asaro and his wife, Cynthia; brother-in-law, Anthony Testaverde and his wife, Jean, Sebastian Scola and his wife, Elizabeth; sister-in-law, Louise Palazola and her husband, Joseph; aunt, Josephine Ciarametaro and special cousin, Pauline Danish. He was also loved by many nephews, nieces, and cousins and godchildren, Tony Testaverde, Lisa Cahill and Joanne Interrante. Vito was predeceased by his father and mother-in- law, Captain Sebastian and Olimpia Scola; grandson, Benjamin Asaro; brother, Peter Asaro and his wife, Jean; sisters, Mary Palazola and her husband, Jerry, Marion Curcuru and her husband, Joseph, Rose Testaverde; infant, Kathleen Asaro; and brother and sister-in-law, Salvatore and Agnes Scola.

Helen Atwood, 90
Formerly of Athol and Gloucester — Helen E. Atwood, 90, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., passed away July 10, 2014. The second child of George and Helen Grant of Athol, Mass., Helen graduated from Athol schools at 15 and from Mass State College, now UMass-Amherst, at 19. She married Milford W. Atwood upon graduation in 1943, and they had three children. That marriage ended in divorce. Helen was a dietician who ran the general’s dining room at the Pentagon during World War II, and served as the dietitian for an elementary school in Gill, Mass. Later, she earned a master’s degree in math education from Salem State College in Salem, Mass., and had a long career as a 7th grade math teacher, retiring in 1987 from Beverly Public Schools in Beverly, Mass. Helen spent more than 30 years as a hospital volunteer, first at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, and then at Helen Ellis Hospital in Tarpon Springs. A lifelong church member, Helen was clerk of her church in Massachusetts, served on a pastoral search committee, and taught Sunday school. In Tarpon Springs, she served on board committees for the Green Dolphin Condominium Association. Helen was devoted to her children and grandson, and spent her life making wonderful opportunities available to them. She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Fred and Carol Atwood-Lyon of Tarpon Springs and Dover, N.H., and Mark and Sally Hamilton of New Port Richey; and her son and his wife, Skip and Cindy Atwood of Tarpon Springs and Nobleboro, Maine. She is also survived by one grandchild, William Curtis Tawney of Tampa; her sister, Barbara Grant Donahue of Shrewsbury, Mass.; and three nieces. Helen was predeceased by her life partner, Doric J. Alviani of Wenham, Mass.; her brother, G. William Grant of Anaheim, Calif.; and her parents, George and Helen Grant, of Athol.Continued ...
