Rockport, MA — Susan J. Thurson, 55, of Rockport, Mass., passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2013, following a brave and graceful battle with cancer. She was the cherished wife and soul mate of Jeffrey Kern of Rockport. She was the beloved daughter of Nancy Thurson of Hingham, Mass., and loving sister of Inger Thurson of Abington, Mass., and Karen Eadie of Hudson, Mass. She is also survived by her in-laws Werner and Midge Kern of Lakewood, N.J., sister-in-law, Vanessa Kern of Toms River, N.J., and brothers-in-law Peter Kern of Easton, Pa., and Todd Eadie of Hudson. She was the devoted aunt of Julie, Matthew, Sydney, Samatha, Hannah, Alison, and Lauren. Susan was predeceased by her father, Andrew Thurson of Scituate, Mass., and grandmother, Maud Thrall of Weymouth, Mass., both of whom she cared for with unfailing loyalty and compassion during their years of failing health.
Susan was employed by the Rockport School System for many years, where her unique blend of patience, intelligence, kindness, and humor was a gift to the students she loved and worked with. She was a devoted volunteer at The Open Door Food Pantry in Gloucester for 20 years, and a longtime participant in the Stamp Out Hunger Letter Carriers' Food Drive. A lover of the outdoors, Susan enjoyed camping, hiking, and collecting items from wherever she traveled, but especially from the beaches and woods around Rockport. She was an avid gardener, who enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers in her yard and at the Lanesville Community Garden. Her friends and family enjoyed Susan's delicious and creative cooking, often made with her homegrown produce and presented with artistic flair. Susan was a beautiful spirit who will be deeply missed and long remembered for the unconditional love she shared with so many people throughout her life.
