Rockport, MA — Joseph W. "Cappy" Knowlton, Jr., 90, of Rockport, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 25, 2012, at the Den Mar Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rockport. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Lorraine, on June 29, 2011.
Joseph was born in Gloucester on June 24, 1922, son of the late Joseph W. and Sarah (Gardner) Knowlton.
He attended Gloucester Schools and was an outstanding athlete. He captained varsity football and baseball teams.
Joe served in the U.S. Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Wasp during WWll. He was employed as an inspector at Eastern Airlines for more than 30 years.
He is survived by his son, David Knowlton and his wife Patricia of Gloucester; daughter, Donna K. Pfosi of Rockport; son Dana Knowlton and his wife Elizabeth of Chilmark; five grandchildren, Jill (Knowlton) MacLeod and her husband Christopher of Gloucester, Ben Pfosi of Boston, Graham Knowlton of College Park, Md., Haley Knowlton of St. George's, Grenada, and Marney Knowlton of New York; two great-grandchildren, Adam and Mia MacLeod of Gloucester. He leaves one sister, Nancy Naylor of Plainfield, N.J. He was predeceased by grandson Jared Knowlton, five brothers and one sister. He leaves several nieces and nephews. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and he will be deeply missed.
